A Garden of Flowers Necklace

February 28th, 2011 · 5 Comments

Floral Seed Bead Necklace Design

This handwoven necklace was created by Artbeads customer Marci. She spent 32 hours creating this design, using flowers, acrylic, Swarovski crystals, seed beads, a magnetic clasp and other components. Her efforts have resulted in a detailed piece of art that captures the colors of spring. Here’s what she has to say about her design:

The inspiration for this necklace is still a mystery to me! I have had these 3 colors – green, blue and purple – of seed beads that just grew on me. When I started I really wasn’t sure what I was going to finish with. The strap is actually made in a stitch called RAW (Right Angle Weave) and is hollow through the middle.

Because I didn’t want a clasp on the back I made the front able to be opened and adjusted. The flowers have Swarovski Crystals in the center – just to add that ‘little bit extra’ in the design.

Honeysuckle – Pantone’s Color for 2011

February 25th, 2011 · 3 Comments

Pantone's Color of the Year

Pantone’s 2011 color of the year is 18-2120 Honeysuckle. This delightful shade is vibrant without being overly bright or showy. Use it as an accent color to make your designs pop or if you’re feeling adventurous, try it as the primary color. We can see this color paired with whites, greens and purples for spring and summer. As winter approaches, try matching it with black, charcoal grey and gold.

Read Across America Day

February 24th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Each year, the National Education Association celebrates “Read Across America Day” on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This scholastic celebration aims to bring children and teens together to read and is part of the ongoing Read Across America campaign. In honor of Dr. Seuss, Random House developed a wonderful site called Seussville which has fun games and educational resources. Check out Seussville’s Read Across America page for fun ways to get your children involved in this exciting event!

In support of Read Across America Day, our designers created a fun bookmark design. Inspired by the beloved Dr. Seuss book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, this bookmark makes reading fun with colorful beads and alphabet letters.

Brooch Jewelry Trend

February 23rd, 2011 · No Comments

This year’s vintage frenzy has given rise to a definitive Victorian accessory, the brooch. Perhaps one of the oldest types of jewelry, today’s brooches are fashion forward with bold shapes and elaborate styles. With their timeless appeal and feminine elegance, brooches instantly dress up any outfit for a very put together appearance.

Flower brooches are popular in all colors and sizes. You can wear a soft flower made from fabric or a metallic flower studded with crystals.

Ornate filigree styles are also popular.

Tucson Treasures are Here!

February 22nd, 2011 · 2 Comments

The Tucson Treasures are here and we’re excited to finally share some of what we brought back for you. We have added colorful Cloisonne Beads, easy-to-use lockets and cute lampwork beads!

When we saw the Copper Bee Pendant by Patricia Healey we knew we had to buy all that we could that day. I was able to talk a bit with Patricia about her unique products and what inspires her to create.

Patricia said the thing that most inspires her is nature. Everyday, she has to be outside for a walk or run and soak it all in. You can see the southwest influence with the organic look of her pieces and you often see leaves, butterflies, birds and flowers.

There was a sign on her table that described how Patricia creates her pieces.

Handmade Copper Beads
Original work by Patricia Healey

Fabricated from sheet metal. First, we cut the shapes out, then put form to metal using the technique of Repousse, (beating the crap out of the metal from the reverse side, giving it form). We use a bronze solder. To get the gorgeous color we use our top secret patination formula, then fire it up with a torch. Finally, the color is sealed in with a metal lacquer.

“I’m not fully dressed…’til I’m adorned in copper!”

These two were my favorite new Patricia Healey pieces I saw. I have a lot of ideas for the heart bezel!

I think the clear lockets are really interesting because you can twist the top off and add a picture or flat object as a pendant for a necklace. We have them in three shapes: round, horizontal oval and vertical oval. It’s easy to change out and you don’t have to worry about waiting for resin to completely cure. You can get really creative without having to make the commitment.

Here are some examples of what you can do with the lockets.

There are more Tucson Treasures coming! Remember, we have a very limited quantity so get them while you can.

New TierraCast® Metamorphosis

February 21st, 2011 · No Comments

Modern Victoria Fashion Jewelry Supplies

TierraCast® is constantly creating fun new shapes and styles to add to their line of beads and findings. They’ve been expanding to include brass oxide and black finishes, which you can read about in a previous blog post. Now, they’ve also added a new collection called Metamorphosis!

This collection takes time-tested shapes and gives them new life and purpose. Locks and keyholes become links, while hearts take on details like spirals and wings. These findings can easily be combined with other elements for fashionable designs. They would work especially well with the Modern Victoria trend or designs with a Steampunk flair.

Looking Forward to Spring

February 18th, 2011 · 2 Comments

It’s still winter, and here in Western Washington that means plenty of rain with talk of possible snow to come. While this winter has been beautiful, I’m looking forward to feeling the warm glow of spring and seeing the bright colors of fresh flowers. My neighbor’s crocuses have made an appearance, so I know spring isn’t too far away!

Tropical Convergence 2011 Trend

I love the colors represented in this year’s spring and summer fashion trend Tropical Convergence. This trend gets its name and colors from lush wildlife. Colors are bright and joyful. Light blue tones are reminiscent of the deep tropical sky, while yellows and golds bring to mind the warm sunlight and captivating ocean reflections. Sunsets are represented with beautiful oranges and pinks and a touch of green suggests endless rainforests.

Now that’s the kind of scenery I’d like to think about!

Pipa Pools Necklace Learning Center Idea

Our designers have just created a colorful carefree necklace called Pipa Pools using this trend as a guide. I love the sea life charms and pendants in this design. They remind me of many happy days spent at the beach.

2011 Jewelry Trends

February 17th, 2011 · 7 Comments

Over the past few years jewelry has pushed and shoved its way to the forefront of fashion becoming bigger and bolder with each passing season. 2011 is no exception and the emerging trends are shaping up to be the most spectacular yet! Large statement pieces are all the rage and are no longer limited to bold necklaces (although they are still very trendy too!). Huge cocktail rings, long dangling earrings and layered bangle necklaces are stealing the spotlight on high fashion runways with their impactful shapes and eye-catching colors. Here’s just a few of my favorite jewelry trends for 2011.

Cabochon jewelry is a big hit for 2011. Whether it’s an intricate seed bead creation with bold cabochon focal points or a long elegant necklace strung with a single pendant, cabochon jewelry is in. I love the timeless appeal cabochons add to jewelry, they definitely fit right in with the vintage trends this year. If you want to try your hand at creating cabochon jewelry, check out our extensive selection of cabochons.

Dramatic bangle bracelets are also in style. To achieve an ultra-chic look try laying several bold bracelets.

A super fun jewelry trend emerging this year is jewelry with fringe and tassels. Designers are adding fringe to bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Suggestive of the 1970′s this fashion forward look can be dressed up or down whether you’re going for a carefree look or wish for sophisticated glamour.

The cocktail ring continues to gain momentum this year. With this trend bigger is better so feel free to get carried away!
