“This charm had just the right blend of elegance & funk for a bottlecap pendant.” –Carribbean Dreams from Cherry Hill, NJ

“These tiny Swarovski Crystal Butterflies are perfect to accent an otherwise plain piece. I use them with stringing wire and they also easily slide onto Boston Chain. They are consistent in color and quality. I use them to symbolize freedom in Cancer support jewelry and Resurrection in Christian bracelets.” –Mamaruu from Suffolk, VA

“I was asked to create some jewelry for a wedding and it had to match her dress. I chose these beautiful Fuchsia Swarovski’s. Loved them and would use them again.” –Roni

Inspiration Behind the Opportunity Necklace

June 24th, 2011 · 3 Comments

All of our Learning Center jewelry ideas come from some spark of inspiration, but few are made with a purpose. One of our newest ideas called “Opportunity Necklace” was created by Artbeads co-owner and jewelry designer Cynthia Kimura. Every piece of this pendant has its own meaning and she explained to me what they were.

She wanted to make a piece with an inspirational message, and she found it from her love of birds. The picture of the cage was the first thing Cynthia liked, and thought to depict a bird escaping from its cage. She chose to place the word “hope” next to the picture to describe that this bird has new hope for life, now that he is free. As he sits on a branch, the bird charm looks back at where he used to be. In a sense, he was once inside the picture frame where the cage sets, and is now outside of the frame looking in. Cynthia incorporated the word “fly” on a silver tag to send another message to the bird: he can now fly wherever he wants to go and rule the air. At the other end of the branch hangs a key—the key to his cage that he now has control of.

You can make your own OpportunityNecklace by visiting the Learning Center and checking out this free idea, or get inspired to create your own special interpretation of this important message.

What is Steampunk?

June 23rd, 2011 · 2 Comments

This popular style of jewelry may be a new concept to you, or you may have heard of the term before but never understood the original meaning. Here’s what steampunk really is and your chance to discover a new way to design jewelry.

Steampunk, although now branched into many different sections of culture, began as a sub-genre of science-fiction literature in the 1980s and early 1990s. The world of steampunk has a Victorian-era feel filled with innovative contraptions. The melding of the two words comes from combining the social or technological aspects of the Victorian era, when they used steam power, and one’s rebellion against parts of it; in essence, a punk. Many movies and television shows have tried to capture the imagery of steampunk, such as Dr. Who and Sherlock Holmes. Essentially, steampunk is the idea of inventing non-conventional contraptions out of resources that would have been found during the 19th Century. This is often why you will find many gears and clocks inside steampunk-style devices.

Steampunk jewelry takes this to another level. Often times, steampunk fashion combines elements of vintage and modern for a unique twist on this concept. You will see a lot of filigree designs, base metals and watch faces with gothic undertones. We have a place on our site dedicated to teaching you how to make steampunk jewelry out of the basic elements. Browse our mixed media to put your own twist on steampunk, too!
