Adopt a Seahorse Giveaway

July 26th, 2011 · 363 Comments

This contest is now closed.
We’ve found 10 lonely little seahorse pendants in need of a good home! These pendants from Unicorne Beads are part of a special collection, so you won’t find them anywhere on our site! That’s why we need to make sure we give these little guys a nice permanent place to live. Each one is created using a traditional lampwork technique, where they are made by hand out of borosilicate and dichroic glass. To enter the contest, leave us a comment below telling us what you would name your seahorse and how you would give it a good home. 10 winners will be randomly selected to each receive one seahorse pendant. This contest runs from Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 12:01AM PT until Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 11:59PM PT. Winners will be announced on Monday, August 1, 2011. We will notify our winners via e-mail, so make sure to enter before the contest ends for your chance to win!

No purchase necessary. Must be 18 or older to enter, one entry per person. Void where prohibited by law. Prizes valued at approximately $6 each. Odds of winning depend on number of entries. Open to US and Canada residents only excluding Quebec.

Wow! Am I really the first to comment? :) A bit nervous about commenting first because I really really really would love to give one of the seahorses a great home! I LOVE seahorses!!! :) [those random selections rarely choose number 1, but if I don't comment now.....] Okay. I have the perfect leash (actually necklace) that I would give my seahorse so that he would be able to enjoy exploring and traveling along on all of my adventures in the art studio. And his name would be Matisse after one of my favorite artists! Thanks for the giveaway!

Sheldon sounds like a good seahorse name. I have this group of sea inspired beads and baubles that I have been wanting to use. I think that Sheldon would be the star (of course Seymour the starfish might be a bit miffed.)
    Enjoy the day!

  • 16 RaelO // Jul 26, 2011 at 10:22 am

I had a friend who used to raise seahorses. He had had a male he named Buzzo after the guy from the Melvins, and he had a pouch of babies. When you feed seahorses you shine a light on the surface, and the seahorses swim close. Some of Buzzo’s kids would swim upside down, and we all thought this was so funny the upside downies would get a bit of extra, so soon they all figured this out and swam upside down.

  • 17 Traci // Jul 26, 2011 at 10:23 am

My daughter saw the seahorse and said that the seahorse looked like the colors of a lagoon so she would name it Lagoona. I more than likely would create a very delicate looking necklace to go with this beautiful pendant and give it to my daughter.

I would be able to give a seahorse an incredible and very loving home because I was a mermaid in a past life (true story!). I currently live in Florida so I can educate my new bundle of joy on all the wonderful sea life but also dangers of the ocean ! Since I came back human this time around, I work at a zoo in the education department and so not only will my lovely seahorse learn about sea creatures but have a diverse education on all animals ! My seahorse will be able to ride safely on my wrist at all times ^_^ Since I am irish I would give my darling a strong irish name, Muiren, which means born of the sea.

I would wear my sweet little seahorse, that I would name “Ever”, every time I volunteer at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida. Families with wonderful children come and want to learn about “Winter”, the dolphin with no tail, who now has a prosthetic tail. She is a miracle because she survives. Every time I teach a child or their parent that we must preserve the ocean and her creatures not only for their survival but for ours “Ever” would be around my neck urging me on to continue those efforts on behalf of every single sea creature. You know the man bear the children in the seahorse world, right??? ;) Amazing, huh? “Ever” would be a continual inspiration. And what better home for “Ever” than with a fellow Mermaid – Me!

  • 38 Debbie Bujnovsky // Jul 26, 2011 at 10:37 am

His/Her name would be Trigger, like my dream horse, and he could hang from my rear view mirror in my car (trust me its an honor) my car is a 2000 and has only 22,000 miles on her, she’s rather spoiled.

  • 41 Kim // Jul 26, 2011 at 10:38 am

I would call my seahorse Mother’s Heart, and then I would make a beautiful necklace for her to rest on and give her as a gift to my mother, who 5 years ago walking on the beach on a family vacation actually found a live little seahorse in the surf and returned it back to the water. Since then she has a special place in her heart of seahorses.

my girls and I love seahorses. We have actually caught one in our crab trap, which we released right away after finding him in there. My youngest daughter would like to name the seahorse Curly Sue, because they have curly tails. I would make a beautiful home from all the treasures of the sea. All kinds of pearls, shells, sea glass. And Curly Sue would be the star, up front and center. Thanks!

  • 64 Georgeana // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:13 am

I love Unicorne boro glass. Each one is so unique and fun. Especially the sea inspired shapes. If I had a seahorse I would create an intricate multi spiral necklace base… as a home, like a seaweed strand. I would have starfish and shells and lots of pretty pearls, as neighbors. I don’t have a name in mind. I think the colors would inspire that. GGA

  • 65 Jill Pittman // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:15 am

Although I live in the high desert of Arizona, the ocean has always been my first love. This seahorse reminds me of tropical beaches and crystal waters that kiss sandy beaches. I would name this seahorse, “Seafoam,” after the effervescent bubbles caused by the ocean’s churning waters.

Seafoam would make it’s new home on a silver braided choker for everyone to admire.

  • 66 Christine Potter // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:16 am

My seahorse will be very happy here because I live near the ocean in Massachusetts and I would take him to visit his New England relatives often. I think I would name him Sinbad, but I will have to see him first to know if that’s his real name or no…

  • 79 Patricia Koko // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:35 am

These are amazing creatures. I checked with my daughter, who loves all animals and she said the Seahorse’s name should be Claire…I would let her hang at the bottom of a fan pull under a ceiling fan where it would appear she is swimming.

  • 80 Mary // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:38 am

I would name my seahorse “WEESNAW”. This is what my daughter calls sea horses, after what the seahorse in SpongeBob says or “whinnies”. I would incorporate it into a pendant for my daughter who is a seahorse and Sponge Bob fanatic.

  • 81 Emily // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:39 am

For a while now I have been looking for an animal pendant necklace. Something simple yet beautiful but I have yet to find the perfect one. The other day at charming Charlies I saw a seahorse necklace and loved the idea but it just wasn’t right….This pendant however is absolutely gorgeous and I would love to carry the seahorse on an elegant gold chain. Thea would be her name.

  • 82 Stepheny Eden Smith // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:41 am

My favorite color is blue, my favorite shape is a heart, and my favorite animal is a seahorse. I actually hope to some day have a little seahorse tank, but in the meantime I’ve started to collect the non-living variety. I’m always on the look out for new pendants, charms, or beads with seahorse accents. If I were to win a seahorse from this collection, I would name him Antonio and give him his very own necklace :-)

  • 83 Tinker Gladdish // Jul 26, 2011 at 11:41 am

I think she would have to be named Goldie, my grandmother used to color her hair the same color as this little cutie. :) I have been collecting several cute things to put on a special necklace for a beach loving very close friend for some time (wrapped beach glass, small naturally drilled shells, some very cute charms….) wont Goldie be adorable as the focal. She would add the perfect mix of color.

  • 88 Melissa Kidd // Jul 26, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I would name my seahorse Poe because there is a poem by Edgar Allen Poe that makes me think of the sea and I am a HUGE fan of both Poe and seahorses. I walk the beach no matter the weather, it is my sanctuary, so the seahorse would always be close to the sea. I’d make him a beautiful rope with beads the colors of the seaglass I pick up on the beach, maybe even incorporating some of my glass treasures. And I need to win something, because my heart is so broken that if something good doesn’t happen soon, well…I hope I win…thank you for the chance!

I love the sea! All winter I can be found walking the beach, photographing the waves crashing on the shore, the sea birds, the shells, the sunsets. I would love to give one of these seahorse a home. I would use him to create a zipper pull to put on my camera-case backpack, along with some of the seaglass, shells, and driftwood I have collected, to bring me good luck to get those picture perfect ocean shots. I would call her Ima….. Ima Seahorse.

I gave my son a blue sea horse stuffy at birth and he had to sleep with it for a long time. He would suck his thumb and suck on the sea horse tag (so upside down). Ever since then we have been collecting sea horses, I painted one on the window, we have a wind chime, salt and pepper shakers. He loves my seahorse necklace, and I know he would love this one as well. He called his sea horse Crystal how fitting of a name for this one as well. I would hang it in his window.

  • 101 Paula Moore // Jul 26, 2011 at 1:33 pm

I would make a beaded suncatcher to place in my bedroom window with my seahorse. That way it would be the last thing I see before falling asleep…Then I would dream. The dream would be of a beautiful seahorse, big enough to ride. His name is Wave, because he was captured as he was riding a wave. But Wave found me and we became great friends, so he wasn’t sad or angry. We would ride together for what seemed like days. Over rocks and sand, stopping to watch star-fish and the reflection of the moon. Then hearing a noise, we knew it was time. We needed to get back to Wave’s home, his sea-ranch. What is that noise? I don’t want this to end! When I realize it is the alarm clock, and it was all just a dream. But as I drag myself out of bed, I happen to look over and I see my beaded sea-horse shining in the glow of the sun. As I admired that sea-horse, I had to blink. For I swear I saw just a little sparkle and a wink from his tiny little eye. It had to be a dream, wasn’t it?

  • 102 Linda Byrd // Jul 26, 2011 at 1:40 pm

This little guy must be named Voyager, and he wants to be a drop pendant on a bead-embroidered collar that I’m designing. The focal is a polymer clay mermaid face on a seashell , and Voyager will be the perfect added touch. Needless to say, most of the collar will be fabulous Japanese seed beads from Artbeads.com!

My first and favorite necklace that I remember ever, about 45 years ago, was a 1″ seahorse carved in natural mother-of-pearl on a silver-plated tiny cable chain! I’d have to call mine Jo in honor of my favorite aunt who gave me that necklace.

  • 120 Andrea // Jul 26, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Seahorses embody the Spirit of the Wild I hold so close to me. I would love to name one Terra Abandon (Terra for short!) for the freedom and peace that come from leaving the earth behind and just floating free. I have a collection of shells I’ve gathered on beaches from North and Central America that I would love to make into a windchime, and set Terra as a part of the central focus, securely in the top, to remind us all to breathe life and allow the four winds (and currents!) to take our worries…She’d look so beautiful in my kitchen window!

  • 121 Caro // Jul 26, 2011 at 7:02 pm

I would name my seahorse Satchmo after Louis Armstrong because it reminds me “what a wonderful world”we have hidden around us.

I would make a sun-catcher with him and add matching sea glass and crystals to reflect the light.

Then I’d hang him near my aquarium so my fish can pretend they’re really in the sea.

  • 122 Jill // Jul 26, 2011 at 7:06 pm

The lustre and sparkle of glass have always made life a little more beautiful. I have a collection of carnival glass that brings colour and light into my life. I would name the seahorse Serendipity. My mother always told me that something so beautiful and unexpected was, quite simply, serendipity! I’d love to make her the focal point of a beaded hemp choker for her, to make sure she never forgets to look for the unexpected beauty in life!

I would name the seahorse after my cousin Emily who was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer yesterday. She is a vibrant, 28-year-old mother of two young children and loves everything ocean-related. I would put this pendant on a necklace for her to lift her spirits as she begins chemotherapy and radiation.

  • 126 Nathalie Scharf // Jul 27, 2011 at 3:27 am

    Merci!

  • 130 Amber // Jul 27, 2011 at 3:56 am

Wow! I LOVE seahorses. I would name her Nixie Pearl (Nixie meaning “Water Sprite”, since I also LOVE fairies, and seahorses seem like little ocean fairies to me.) I would pair her with a “magical ” collar (DIY bail of sparkly silver chain) and leash (beaded chain necklace to coordinate with the colors of the seahorse.) Since I live in a more mountainous area, I would wear her to remind me of the beach that I miss so much, bringing the ocean to the mountains. She would be well taken care of, and if I finally am blessed with a baby girl, I would pass it down to her as an heirloom piece.

  • 131 Kathy Lindemer // Jul 27, 2011 at 4:17 am

I would name my sea horse Coral and combine a coral reef bead with the sea horse in a necklace that I can wear and blog about. I would love to provide a good home to Coral. I love to use themes from nature in my jewelry. Nature is my inspiration.

  • 132 Jennifer Garrison // Jul 27, 2011 at 4:20 am

I think seahorses are the most fascinating of all the fishes – and love the fact that the males carry the babies. I would name this seahorse Aura because of its beautiful golden shimmer. I would put it on a silk ribbon and make a necklace for my daughter, Rowan, who thinks she is a mermaid, and loves the ocean.

  • 133 Julie // Jul 27, 2011 at 4:28 am

If I had a lampwork bead seahorse, I would name him Will . Once he arrived, he would get a delightful saddle and reign designed especially for him in colors and metals to accent his best feature . I would introduce him to his mate a stunning cloisonne seahorse named Tilly. They could reside together and perhaps one day they’ll surprise me and I’ll find little seahorses a new breed which I’ll call lamsonne.

  • 135 Lesley Hayman // Jul 27, 2011 at 4:58 am

Oceanus seems like a natural name for a seahorse. He would live in a beautiful world filled with 2 and 3-spring Swarovski coral pendants (not as big and beautiful as him, of course). Complimentary small Swarovski fish and shells would also surround him. Nothing but the best glass seed beads in his native ocean colors will also provide an excellent home for him. I LOVE ocean themed beads! :)

  • 136 Nery // Jul 27, 2011 at 5:34 am

I would name mine Seabiscuit. He would go to a loving home with a large tank full of beads. He would also have daily walks around my neck as I go about my errands.

  • 137 Alison // Jul 27, 2011 at 5:55 am

Having grown up on the East Coast (Nova Scotia), I adore all creatures of the sea. I think I will christen my new equus friend Atlantis and have a stunning string of aquamarines that I think he will enjoy very much. The aquamarines were given to me by my little boy (also born in March) and he would be so delighted to see a sweet seahorse nestled in amoungst them.

  • 138 Carol // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:07 am

I would name a lovely seahorse Algernon, and call him Algae for short, since seahorses love to hang out in frondy forests. I would create just such a habitat for Algae with wire and bead crochet. When not being worn by me or one of my daughters, he would live on my jewelry display and add to the beauty. A lovely inspiration for creativity!

  • 147 Jen Rutsky // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:13 am

I love seahorses and always wanted one as a pet but unfortunately they need salt water which is a pain in the neck to do for a fish tank. Anyway I would name him Cheerio because growing up that was my horses name. He would have a great life and we would take perfect care of him because we are huge animal lovers!

  • 148 Jill I. // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:16 am

  • 149 Devon // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:18 am

I think I’d have to hold this little guy in my hands to know what I’d want to do with him but I’m thinking pearls, shells and coral to make him feel at home. I’ve decided on the name Sully the Seahorse after my favorite local hero Sully Sullenburger. He might have flown the skies but he became the Captain of the Sea by delivering his passengers and crew to safety as I would imagine the noble sea horse would do. Can’t you just picture this little sea horse with a Captains hat? :-)

I would love to wear it and have him join my collection of seahorses that people have given me over the years. Each one has their own story and “Papa” would be a wonderful addition. I am so taken by how the father seahorses are the caretakers and protectors of the young and are such a wonderful model for our young fathers. • 167 Darby Clare // Jul 27, 2011 at 11:08 am

Once upon a time, a foal was born deep in the sea.  His daddy had birthed him and called his name, Lee.  Lee loved stories about places a far so he asked every sea creature to tell him about places away.  One day, a whale, Baylooga, by name, told Lee of the sea far far away where ice floated on water and penguins would play.  Lee fell  in love with the spirit called Snow and from that minute on he knew where he must go.  Beauty and mystery crystals  all silvery, something he just  had to see.

How could he go there? How could he live?  He was young and strong, but the journey was long.  When he arrived  he’d find her but only on land.  He couldn’t survive without water and sand.  He went to wise Neptune, the King of the sea, to ask him how to make this dream be.

Neptune spoke of the family and how following Snow meant his permanent leave from life under the sea.  But, Lee’s heart was set on finding his Love despite hardship, and leaving all that he knew.  Neptune knew that this was a sign that the Love Lee had in his heart was True Blue.  He said, “Lee, you must go on the long lonely journey.  In promise you this.  When you find your love, Snow, you will know how to go.  I will cast now a spell, so that on land you can dwell.

The journey was long, Lee went against the Sirens song
He learned how to go to the North to find snow.  He was young and strong, of course.  But not wise and mature as a stallion, mustang or horse.
He met adventures a plenty  and of lessons there were many.  As he learned he grew wise and his body grew old.

Then,  the water became colder than cold.  It was solid in places and dark and quite scary.  He knew where she was by the love in his heart, leading him on without question or pause.  Then suddenly Joy filled his mind and his Soul.  Snow was just above him and calling his name.  He swam to the surface and saw his true love.  She fell from the sky one bead at a time.  Each crystal was unique and reflected the sun.  Lee knew that his travels were done.

He moved carefully to her.  She held him quite close.  He felt her around him.  He was lonely no more.  Neptune’s spell was true.  Lee was free from the sea, he was with his dear love, he was transformed to be such as she.  He became crystal,  sparkling, unique and clear. Just before the cold took hold to complete his bond with her, he smiled a smile that surpassed and smiles and will be on his face for eternity.

Ella the Seahorse was elegant in glass,
And lived her life bobbing in seagrass.
She dined on delicate shrimp and fish,
And sometimes plankton would round out her dish.
In tropical waters that shimmered indeed,
She was a beautiful, precious and uniquely-strung bead.

Ella would have a place of honor on a necklace, and since they live in seagrass beds, I’d compliment her with thin, wavy green leaves and calm, tropical colors (aqua, turquois, yellow-orange) and add other complimentary charms such as shells, sand dollar, and more. Maybe even a treasure chest. She’s beautiful.

Sea Horses are so majestic. I would name mine Essence. There is a necklace that I have been wanting to make for a long time. I’ve seen one done with one of these sea horses and it was beautiful. I would wear it all the time!

  • 281 Alison McGlamry // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Being a dancer, I immediately thought of “Aurora” from the ballet Sleeping Beauty. It also thought of the aurora borealis lights and ab crystal rhinestones one would find on a costume. The seahorse moves with the grace of a ballet dancer and the effect of mystical stage lighting has a connection with the iridescent features that the ocean contains. Pearls, paua shells, etc. Being a Pisces in sign, I am in love and drawn to pieces such as these. This one is gentle. I would string her with lightly colored pastel crystals, and copper crystal glass to bring out the brown tones, shell, freshwater pearls, seed beads, and a sea-inspired clasp or even a shell button. I would definitely bring out the iridescent in her. Beautiful!

  • 282 Susan Hamilton // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:56 pm

I would name my sea horse Lemuria after our ancient home now under the briney waves. I would hang Lemuria on a sterling silver bracelet accompanied by his other under water friends such as sand dollar , sea shell and turtle:)

I would keep it simple to show case the lovely work of Unicorne Beads (I drool when visiting their website). I would be very greatful to Artbeads and Unicorne Beads should I be chosen to own one of God’s most beautiful creatures.

  • 301 Jeanie // Jul 29, 2011 at 4:52 am

Sea horses are such wonderful little creatures. They are so graceful floating around. Many years ago when I was a teenager I tried to raise seahorses. Unfortunately I was not successful. After the first one died the second one would nudge the first one who would just float away. It was very sad to watch. I never tried again as I did not want to take the chance of them dying. They are just too beautiful. I will watch them in the public aquariums.

  • 302 Adrienne // Jul 29, 2011 at 6:34 am

Sea Horses are such carefree, happy creatures. Everyone always wants to watch them in the aquariums; they make you feel good. I create Sun Catchers. If I could adopt “Prism”, which is what I would name mine, I would create a special Sun Catcher using Swarovski crystals including a beautiful Shell crystal from Artbeads. “Prism” could spend it’s days chasing happy little rainbows.

  • 303 Cindi // Jul 29, 2011 at 6:36 am

My seahorse would be named IKE to remind me that even after disaster beauty can be found. We went through Hurricane Ike and saw what devastation the sea can do. However, it can also produce such beauty and wonder in the shells, sea glass, plants, and sea creatures we find. I would use my IKE in a necklace with shells, sea glass, and beads the color of the sea to show how beauty can be found even after such a disaster.

  • 304 Alison // Jul 29, 2011 at 6:47 am

On July 8th I underwent an intensive surgery. Three weeks later, I am beginning to feel moe like my old self, but nowhere near back to normal. I would use the seahorse to make an ornament for my car’s rear view mirror. She would remind me of the tidal movement of the oceans and of life in general. I would call her “Luz” – or “Light.” Thank you.

  • 305 KitteeKae // Jul 29, 2011 at 3:32 pm

    what a lovely little creature!
for me, the name could be nothing else but Bijou… something small, delicate & exquisitely made.
should i win one of them… i would create a necklace with the beautiful little seahorse as the focal. it would be a wonderful reason to use some of the glass beads, pearls and bicone crystals i’ve been admiring.
i’d use a matching silk cord & string 3 sizes of smooth round beads or pearls (to match the seahorse) alternating with faceted bicone crystals. i’d put round, flat hammered gold links for a bit of shine between the sections of beads & crystals, like coins… lost treasure you might find in the sea.

  • 306 Maggie // Jul 29, 2011 at 3:49 pm

I’d name the little fella Thaddeus, and when he isn’t frolicking around my collarbone, he’ll be dancing in my bedroom window, showing off his colors to the world.

  • 350 Nigeala Nigrath // Jul 30, 2011 at 11:40 pm

I would name my Seahorse “Nereid” (sounds like “nerry-id”), after the magical sea spirits of Greek mythology. The Seahorse’s scientific name is Hippocampus, and it is also the name of a part of the human brain which is shaped like a seahorse! When a person has clinical depression, their Hippocampus decreases in size, and as they recover, it increases in size. I’ve made several branched lariat necklaces with a seahorse theme. If I’m given the chance to adopt “Nereid”, he will undoubtedly grace a new seahorse necklace. One of the things I love about seahorses, is that, although they are fish, they form strong pair bonds, and the male seahorse protects the eggs/babies in a special pouch on his abdomen, until they’re ready to be born. Not many fish, nor males of any kind, do that! I also love the seahorse’s cousin, the Leafy Sea Dragon. They’re very magical-looking, too! Why not do a web search and check them out? I bet you’ll fall in love with them. While you’re at it, you could check out the Weedy Sea Dragon and Pipe Fish. Enjoy!

  • 351 Joanne // Jul 31, 2011 at 2:38 am

I would love to incorporate some of my grandchildren’s finds from the beach too. We love to get up early and go shell hunting on vacation. After completing the “halter” we would go visit the other horses in the area. I’m sure SeaBiiscuit will come in first place!

HippoC. would be the name. And his/her (won’t know until I see it which it is) would have a home on a necklace worn every day. I’m sure Hippo would garner quite a bit of attention as I deliver auto parts for a living. The mechanics I see everyday really get a kick out of the jewelry I make and wear. Perhaps a necklace made in a chainmaille pattern, byzantine, would be the best home base – in water colors of course!
