Black Friday Special-Revisited

November 23rd, 2012 · 2 Comments

Today we’re revisiting our history of Black Friday with a shopping treat just for you at the end!

Every year on this day, thousands of frantic shoppers race to the stores to get the best deals on gifts for the holidays. The most wonderful time of the year can sometimes turn into a nightmare if you get caught up in the Black Friday epidemic on the streets. Thanksgiving has marked the beginning of the holiday season in America since the 19th century, and retailers have clung to this idea for market value. Although the term “Black Friday” originally referred to the stock market panic on September 24, 1864, set off by a drop in the price of gold, these two words have now become synonymous with one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The justification of the term came from the black ink mark left on accounting reports for retailers when they made a profit—or the black mark on a shopper’s credit score for getting too much in debt.

This year for Black Friday, shop from the comfort of your own home and order online! We’ve got a massive 20% off storewide sale happening through the holiday weekend so you can save big on your favorite jewelry making and crafting supplies. Although you will catch other amazing online deals after the weekend on Cyber Monday, start saving now with us! Whether you want to give everyone homemade presents this year or are in need of a cool buy for an avid artist, has what you need! Use the coupon code ZZPILGRIM when you check out to get 20% off your store-wide purchase with no minimum! This deal only lasts until November 27, 2012, so take advantage of our biggest sale of the year now!

If you want to greet everyone this year with handmade holiday treats, get inspiration from our collection of over 900 free ideas for jewelry making and crafts in the Learning Center. 9/11 Special

September 11th, 2012 · 1 Comment

Last year on September 11, I wrote a blog about Patriot Day and what it stands for. I also highlighted the new 9/11 Memorial erected in New York, which opened last year. I don’t think I need to remind all of us what happened September 11, 2001, nor remind readers that this has become a national holiday. This year, instead, I’d like to share inserts from the Patriot Day Proclamation, given by former President George W. Bush. No matter your political standing, these words will resonate with everyone today:

Inspired by the heroic sacrifices of our firefighters, rescue and law enforcement personnel, military service members, and other citizens, our Nation found unity, focus, and strength. We found healing in the national outpouring of compassion for those lost, as tens of millions of Americans participated in moments of silence, candlelight vigils, and religious services. From the tragedy of September 11 emerged a stronger Nation, renewed by a spirit of national pride and a true love of country.

Americans also have fought back against terror by choosing to overcome evil with good. By loving their neighbors as they would like to be loved, countless citizens have answered the call to help others. They have contributed to relief efforts, improved homeland security in their communities, and volunteered their time to aid those in need.

Community isn’t defined as the neighborhood you live in—your community could be a support group, a Facebook page or even this blog. How did you strengthen your community?

New Swarovski Innovations for Fall/Winter 2013/2014

September 4th, 2012 · 4 Comments

Here’s an exclusive sneak peek at the newest Innovations from SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS for Fall 2013 and Winter 2014! This season is all about what Swarovski calls glocalization—an embracement of one’s national heritage and local traditions (possibly in response to the Olympic Games). For Austrian-based Swarovski, this meant delving in to the folkloric charm of their country with new colors and shapes.

Crystal Blue Shade
This universally unique new color displays a smoky blue whisper that is both romantic and strong, creating a fresh and sophisticated feel. With just a shimmer of silver streaking through its slate blue hue, Crystal Blue Shade is like the still, moonlit water.

Light Turquoise
This is a color that has to been seen to truly appreciate its beauty! It’s a new kind of blue, but still has a familiar feel—a perfect blend of Aquamarine and Blue Zircon. Light Turquoise is meant to reflect the blue skies of Alpine treks, along with cool arctic winters and Caribbean summers. Pair it with earth tones for lovely contrast or a black and white pattern.

Neon Green
Part of the Spring/Summer 2015 collection, this pre-launch color comes off of the successful neon pearl colors from earlier this year. Now you can add this deep, vibrant green to your collection of crystal pearls when your designs need a real color pop!

Neon Red
Neon Red is another spring/summer 2015 Innovations launch. This pumpkin-red pearl further demonstrates the power of neon pearls.

The timeless pearl is getting a boost of elegance with the very sophisticated Grey shade. With Light Grey and Dark Grey already on the market, you can now create a cascading effect of grey pearls in your jewelry.

This brilliant cut puts Swarovski chatons closer to the look and feel of real diamonds. With complex faceting and durability, this evolution from the 1028 Chaton is the new definition of excellence.

The powerful symbol of the key is now captured in crystal form. This traditional shape outlined in precise facets makes the ultimate focal point for a design. Its avant-garde charm and luxurious feel comes in neutral shades to give it a more natural look.

Pure Leaf
This organic and playful shape is perfect for complementing any look you’re going for, whether it be a fun floral fall design or a nod to vintage subtlety. Bring the beauty of nature into any jewelry or accessory with this shape, available in a variety of components.

Victory Pendant
The Victory pendant features a familiar donut design but kicks up the contemporary feel with asymmetric faceting. Designed to resemble a medallion, the symbol of aesthetic triumph, the lightweight Victory shape appeals to mod-inspired pieces and modern fashion statements.

BeCharmed Pearl
Much like their BeCharmed beads, the pearl presents an elegant look for large-hole jewelry. Finished with stainless steel grommets for a durable look, you can mix and match them with other large-hole components to tell a story with your jewelry.

Mini Shapes
These small yet precise geometric components are the perfect addition to any jewelry idea. Their flat, faceted design is what makes them exact—but their small size is what makes them perfect. The new mini shapes are available in square, round and oval cuts.

Devin and Cynthia’s Trip to Murano

August 27th, 2012 · 2 Comments

This summer, Artbeads co-owners Devin and Cynthia traveled to Murano, Italy, to learn the truth behind Murano Glass. Murano glass is most commonly made using a lampworking technique, which requires melting the glass in order to mold it into the desired shape. The raw glass is made up of various particles, including siliceous sand, soda, lime and potassium. These components are first melted together in an oven which turns it into the molten glass material. Then, the artist removes it from the oven and is ready to mold. Manipulating the glass can be done with instruments like pliers and scissors, or glass blowing. This ancient art form began in the 9th Century and continues its legacy today.

While in search of real Murano glass, Devin and Cynthia met amazing new people who opened their eyes to a new way of appreciating this special glass. The rise of Murano glass’ popularity brought with it the integration of “Murano-Style” glass, a cheaper version that is nothing like the real deal. This was why Devin and Cynthia wanted to share their experience—to prove to customers that the Murano glass we sell is just like the ones they found in the city.

Devin and Cynthia first started out in Venice before venturing to Murano. In order to reach the small Italian island, the two had to ride a taxi boat over. The various canals that made up Murano were bordered by numerous little shops selling glass pieces. Though Venice had more glass jewelry, Murano shared with Devin and Cynthia its share of incredible jewelry as well as beads and vases.

They met the Meretti family who make Murano glass, including the shop keeper and master glass maker. Devin and Cynthia got to tour the family’s museum which included a peek inside their hot shop, but then received a special glimpse at their personal gallery. Inside this gallery were tall chandeliers, intricate vases and delicate figurines all handmade from glass. It’s a 25-year commitment, they found out, to become a master artist. You must go through an apprenticeship and have the creative drive to be successful. This commitment is getting harder and harder to find in the new generations, making the Murano glass even more unique. You can tell if a Murano glass piece is real by spotting the master’s mark. Each master leaves a special mark on the surface.

Devin and Cynthia, and all of us at Artbeads, want our customers to know how much we care about providing them with quality products. We love knowing that there’s a story behind each bead we sell, and we enjoy telling you its adventure so far. The journey of a bead is never really complete until it’s wrapped up in purple tissue paper, delivered to a doorstep and strung onto a design.
