Sapphire – September’s Birthstone

How lucky for anyone born in this early autumn month! Your birthstone is the gorgeous sapphire. With its dramatic deep blue hue this sparkling stone is an old symbol of good luck for those born in September. In fact, sapphire means “clear thinking.” Here’s a short poem written from the Gregorian calendar from which our birthstones are determined:

A maiden born when autumn leaves
Are rustling in September’s breeze,
A Sapphire on her brow should bind;
To bring her joy and peace of mind.

The blue sapphire commonly associated with September birthstones has held mystical powers for centuries. Most believed those who shared their birth month with sapphire possessed the qualities often associated with the beautiful blue stone. These included traits like truth and sincerity. Sapphires were also sometimes worn to reduce fevers, cure hearing problems and help stop cancer.

Add your own touch of cool sapphire blue by using some of our Swarovski sapphire crystals in your jewelry and craft ideas to bring good luck and health wherever you go. You could even try using lapis lazuli gemstones, a dark blue stone often connected to sapphires. Remember to play around with color, too! Sapphires come in all sorts of different colors, except for red—a red sapphire is actually a ruby. Its dark blue tones are a cool, inviting transition into the fall season and it’s time to celebrate sapphire!
